Sallie Marie Johnson, born Sallie Marie Salyer on July 18, 1935, in Ashland, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025, in St. Petersburg, Florida, at the age of 89. A devoted mother, resilient military wife, and dedicated public servant, Sallie lived a life defined by love, strength, and unwavering commitment to her family.

In 1951, Sallie married Richard Johnson, and together they raised four children—Richard Johnson, James Johnson, Curtis Johnson, and Suzette Brown—while embracing the challenges of military life. As a military wife, Sallie moved their family of six an extraordinary 26 times in 25 years, creating a warm and stable home through every change. Her tireless dedication and nurturing spirit made her an exceptional mother, deeply shaping her children’s lives. Sallie and Richard later divorced, and she was widowed by her second husband, Pauli Zappela, and her third husband, James Hook. Through each chapter, Sallie’s warmth and resilience shone brightly.

Sallie retired from the United States Postal Service, where she served as a clerk at the Crossroads Post Office in St. Petersburg, Florida. Her diligence, kindness, and friendly presence made her a cherished colleague and community member.

Sallie is survived by her son, Curtis Johnson, her daughter, Suzette Brown, and her four beloved granddaughters, Christina, Geneva, Jaime, and Kaitlyn, along with extended family and friends who will treasure her memory. She was preceded in death by her sons, Richard and James Johnson, her former husband, Richard Johnson, and her late husbands, Pauli Zappela and James Hook.

A celebration of Sallie’s life will be held at a later date in St. Petersburg, Florida, with details to be shared by the family. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to a charity of your choice in Sallie’s memory, honoring her generous and caring spirit.
