Robert Dougherty Obituary

Robert “Bob” James Dougherty, 74 years old, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 in Tampa, FL. He was born on July 27, 1947 in Middletown, NY to the late Thomas and Kathleen Dougherty, and grew up in Middletown, NY.

Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served as a cryptologic technician based in Japan for several years as a young man. After leaving the Navy, Bob moved to Connecticut where he worked as a Constable in Old Lyme before becoming a United States Postal Inspector in New Haven, where he had a successful career of over 25 years. Upon retirement, Bob moved to the Villages, FL and then to Riverview, FL in 2015. Throughout the years, Bob was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. In his retirement, Bob could often be found on one of Florida’s many golf courses playing his favorite game and making friends with most everyone he met. Bob loved to cook, often sharing his recipes with friends, and he loved to travel. He took loving care of his sister Suzanne, and his mother. He was always there to lend a hand to any of his friends. He was a good person who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A family member wrote, “His laugh was sweet, and we all loved hearing it.” His smile and laugh will surely be missed.

Robert is survived by his dear friend, Marianella Morrison of St. Petersburg, FL; his stepdaughter, Bridget McDonald of Killingworth, CT; his cousins: Karol Ramsey of Huntington, NY, Kim Kroeger of Alton Bay, NH, Kip Kroeger of Monticello, NY, Kevin Kroeger of Monticello, NY, Kathleen Kroeger of Niwot, CO, Kellie Beran of Niwot, CO, Karla Guarino of Niwot, CO, Keith Kroeger of Greenwood Lake, NY, Kerry Astras of Bridgeville, NY, Carl Lichvarcik of Pittsburgh, PA, Donna Buswell of Knoxville, TN, Brenda Trottier of Clairmont, NH, Renee LaBoda, Jay LaBoda, and Tommy LaBoda; his life-long friends Merilee MacKinnon and Jon George, of the Villages, FL; and numerous other loved ones. He was predeceased by his parents Thomas and Kathleen Dougherty, and his sister, Suzanne.

A graveside service and burial with full military honors will be held on Monday, September 27, at 10 a.m. in Bay Pines National Cemetery in North St. Petersburg, FL. A memorial gathering in Middletown, NY is being planned for a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Stroke Foundation.
