Jeannine Elizabeth Talley

October 26, 1937 ~ November 18, 2022 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Obituary

After a life of accomplishments and high adventures, Jeannine Elizabeth Talley set sail a final time and left us so much better off for having known and loved her during her 85 years on land and sea. Jeannine, only child of Annetta Jewel (Culler) and Joseph Wilson Talley, was born in Lakeland, Florida on October 26, 1937. After graduating high school, she obtained a Music Education degree from Florida State University in Tallahassee in 1960. She received a Master's Degree in Folklore and Mythology from UCLA in 1967, and a PH.D. in Germanic Languages from UCLA in 1977. Jeannine created a sailing school for women in Los Angeles and helped women follow their dreams to succeed in all kinds of adventures, professions and occupations. Her first book, WOMEN AT THE HELM, tells how her dream of sailing the high seas became a reality and relates her cruising adventures in the South Pacific. She also wrote BANSHEE'S WOMEN: CAPSIZED IN THE CORAL SEA and LURE OF THE TRADEWINDS: TWO WOMEN SAILING THE PACIFIC OCEAN. Jeannine taught at UCLA, and at the University of Guam prior to her retirement in 2003. She was an educator, sailor, artist, musician, fused glass artist, writer, and member of a recorder group. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her spouse, Suzanne Martindale, three first cousins, Lynn Wilson, Alan Culler, Sara Jean Owens, and many extended family members. A celebration of life is planned at a later time. A private funeral will be held at Heartwood Preserve, Trinity, Florida, on November 23, 2022 arranged by Sorensen Funeral Home of St. Petersburg, Florida. Instead of other remembrances, please consider a contribution in her name to the Nature Conservancy, Attn: Treasury, 4245 N. Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 22203.
