Dr. Amy Lou Zent Obituary

After a long life filled with adventure, faith, selfless love and caring for family and friends, participation and leadership in numerous communities of Christians, and service and charity to others around the world through her learning, teaching and sharing, Amy passed on June 10, 2025, a week after her 89th birthday.

She was remembered and celebrated with a service followed by food and fellowship on June 14th, 2025, at First United Methodist Church in Gulfport, Fla., a warm and personal congregation that she and her husband Stan joined at least a dozen years ago, when they first began spending more winters in the area.

A video of the memorial service can viewed here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8ghCKjckgc  An opening hymn and prayer were unfortunately cut off in the recording. The video begins with people sharing memories of Amy. Their is also a post in her remembrance that is pinned to the top of her Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/amy.zent.1 which includes collages of photos from her life that were assembled and designed by her grandchildren for her memorial service, and also her notes for a Laity Sunday talk that she gave in 2001 at their long-time church community in Indianapolis, Rosedale Hills United Methodist Church, in which she shared her journey of faith while teaching and traveling abroad.

Amy began her life on the farm of her parents, Lois and Ruhl Buskirk, near a rural Indiana crossroads known as Nine Mile, because it was about nine miles from downtown Ft. Wayne. Her education began in a school with just one classroom, but she eventually earned a Doctorate of Education from Indiana University. Her undergraduate degree was earned at Indianapolis Central College (now University of Indianapolis) where she and Stan met, and fell in love.

They travelled extensively around the globe — for work as teachers, for adventure, for the pleasure of learning about new places and cultures, and for the love of engaging with new people and making new friends. She was also both a teacher and administrator at various times in the Indianapolis public school system.

Amy’s son Jon passed in 2017 at the age of 55. She is survived and will be deeply missed by her husband Stan, her son Sherman, her daughter-in-law Angel and her three grandchildren: Sawyer, Carly Rae and Mary. She is also survived by one of her four siblings, her sister Claris (Buskirk) Eversole.
