Christian Daniel Maher, 48, of St. Petersburg, Florida, passed away on February 4, 2024 from injuries incurred in a tragic accident. He was born on June 19, 1975 in Columbus, Ohio, the son of Daniel M. and Jan (Collins) Maher.
Chris was predeceased by his mother, Jan. He is survived by his wife, Bernadette Longart Gonzalez, and their daughter, Marisol Jan Del Valle Maher Longart (age 6); his bonus Mom, Pamela (Heishman) Maher; his siblings, Courtney Maher, Colin (Lyndsay) Maher and Clayton Maher, and his step-siblings, Lisa Perriguey and Travis Cornwall; his nephews, Gage Maher, Styles Maher, Hudson Maher and Camden Maher; 9 step-nephews and step-nieces; and a step-grandnephew and a step-grandniece.
Chris and his daughter Marisol enjoyed many good times together, including swimming, vertical ventures, cycling and going to the park and beaches. A pair of adrenaline junkies, they shared a love of sweets and ice cream. He was a very proud Daddy and faithfully attended her gymnastics practices. Marisol knows her Daddy will be in heaven with his Mommy and watching over her.
Chris graduated from Thomas Worthington High School in Worthington, Ohio (Class of 1996), following which he earned his B.S. degree from Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida (Class of 2000). Upon graduation from Eckerd, Chris returned to Columbus where he began a career in finance. However, always up for an adventure, Chris obtained a job in and moved to London, England, where he lived for 18 years. He worked there as a sales executive for financial printers and for an international insurance company. His time in London was broken up by a brief return to living in Columbus, but missing the fast-paced city life and yearning for even more cloud coverage than Ohio could offer, he returned to London to continue his adventure.
While living across the pond, he developed a vast network of amazing people he was honored to call his friends. He also met Bernadette following his return to London. The strength and diversity of the friendships Chris and Bernadette made in London was evident at their 2015 wedding in Hvar, Croatia which was attended by 13 nationalities.
Chris eventually made it back to the states, where he and his family settled in St. Petersburg. He brought with him permanently acquired British terms, such as bloody, trousers, queue, lift and loo. Chris valued people and cherished his experiences with them. Whether it was traveling the world or meeting up at a local bar, Chris was always the life of the party. Above all, Chris was intelligent and thoughtful, and as well was mischievous with an undeniable infectious laugh that could only be described as sinister.
Chris loved the game of golf. He played for the varsity team in high school, where he forged life-long friendships with teammates and classmates. Chris had the good fortune of being able to develop his game as a youth in Central Ohio at both Muirfield Village Golf Club (where he won both a men’s club championship while still in high school and a junior club championship) and Brookside Golf & Country Club (where he won a junior club championship), and he had life-long friendships from those clubs as well. Following his graduation from high school, Chris went on to play on the golf team at Eckerd. As an adult, at various times he was a member of Muirfield Village Golf Club (and its Memorial Club) and Queenwood Golf Club outside of London.
Due to Chris’ family and friendships all over the globe, the family will be scheduling future celebrations of life in both St. Petersburg and Columbus and will endeavor to notify all of his friends an adequate time in advance. For those who monitor Bernadette or Lyndsay on Facebook, they will post information on those celebrations as soon as it is available.
An online platform has been created HERE for friends and family near and far to share a memory, a photo or simple words of encouragement. All that is shared will be compiled in a book for his daughter, Marisol, to have wonderful memories of her Daddy for years to come.
