Charles Robinson Obituary
Robinson,Charles Benjamin, known as "Charlie" or "Benny," passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, in St. Petersburg, Florida, at the age of 81. Born on September 14, 1944, in Tampa, Florida, Charlie lived a full and vibrant life rooted in his hometown and dedicated to his family, career, community, and passions.
Charlie grew up in Tampa, where he attended Robinson High School before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Business from the University of South Florida. His early years were marked by determination and hard work as he balanced young family life with various jobs while pursuing his education. After graduating, Charlie embarked on a successful career in sales before co-owning and managing Hydraulic Equipment in Tampa. Under his leadership, the business thrived until its eventual sale and his well-earned retirement.
A proud veteran, Charlie served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1964. Stationed at Plattsburgh Air Force Base in New York during his service, he exemplified dedication and commitment to his country.
Charlie's life was enriched by his many hobbies and interests. He had a lifelong interest in hiking, backpacking, skiing, hunting, boating, fishing, diving, photography, and flying as a private pilot. However, soccer held a special place in his heart. Charlie's involvement with the sport spanned decades as a player, coach, referee, and administrator, where he contributed significantly to the development of the Florida Suncoast Soccer League. He also served as an administrator for both the Florida State Soccer Association and the United States Soccer Association's Amateur Division. His dedication earned him induction into 3 different Halls of Fame for his outstanding service to soccer at local, state, and national levels—a testament to his passion and interest in fostering community through sports.
Charlie was deeply committed to family. He is survived by his loving wife Jan Robinson; loving daughter Lisa Whetstone and her husband Mark; grandson Benjamin Whetstone; granddaughter Victoria Whetstone; stepson Conor McAtasney and wife Meghan along with their children Keegan, Landon, Kinley, and Rylan McAtasney; stepson Scott McAtasney and wife Jennifer along with their sons Kieran and Aidan McAtasney; niece Jenny Nehring; nephews Frank and Larry Robinson; many great-nieces and great-nephews, and his former wife, Wansley Gail McIntyre Robinson (mother of Lisa). He was predeceased by his parents Frank Vance Robinson and Agnus Inez (Ray) Robinson; brother Frank Vance Robinson Jr.; and sister Patricia Robinson Yale.
Charlie spent most of his life enjoying all that the Tampa Bay area had to offer-while building a successful business and raising 3 children. In retirement, he spent his last few years in a Pinellas Point retirement community. Fittingly for someone so passionate about soccer, Charlie passed away while watching a World Cup Soccer game—a poignant reflection of how deeply intertwined the sport was with his life.
Charles Benjamin Robinson will be remembered for his strong dedication to family, community contributions through soccer administration, adventurous spirit in pursuing diverse hobbies, and steadfast commitment to living life fully. May those who knew him find solace in their memories of this remarkable man whose legacy will endure through the lives he touched so profoundly.
