Carole Ulinski Obituary

Born, June 2, 1937, in Flushing, New York

Preceded in death by her father Joseph L. Anderson, her mother Anne Singer Anderson and her husband Hank Ulinski.

Carole and her sister Joelle grew up in Flushing, New York in the borough of Queens.  Carole’s father worked on Wall Street for the Federal Reserve Bank.  Her mother, a homemaker, was active in their community, especially the Girl Scouts. Carole and her sister participated in the Girl Scouts, a tradition Carole passed on to her two daughters, Karen and Wendy.

Carole graduated from Bayside High School and left New York for Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  She returned to New York, married and had two daughters.  Soon a great career opportunity for Carole’s husband took the young family to North Carolina.

As Carole raised her family in North Carolina, she made the majority of her daughter’s clothes (allowing them to pick out the fabric and trimmings), took art lessons and refined her cooking skills. A gifted cook, Carole wowed her family with handmade ravioli, creampuffs and her favorite meal, lobster.  The family also took in numerous stray cats.  There was always a cat or a kitten curled up at the house.  Heidi, a German Shepherd was raised alongside the girls and both daughters had gerbils, hamsters and fish – Carole never said no to an animal, a trait both daughters carry on.

While Carole worked to create a comfortable home for her family, her parents retired to Largo, Florida.  Carole and her daughters made multiple trips to the Pinellas area annually.  When Carole’s mother died, Carole applied for a position with the Veteran’s Administration at Bay Pines.  Her Ford Fiesta packed and cat in tow, she moved to Pinellas County.  The move was initially meant to be closer to her father and support him though his grief, but it was in Florida that Carole truly found her independence, a wonderful group of friends and the love of her life – Hank Ulinski.

And while no one will ever doubt Carole’s love of Hank, Carole had another love – her house.  The purchase of her home was very symbolic for Carole.  And in Hank, she and her home found the perfect partner.  Together she and Hank renovated and updated the home.  They planned and maintained its elaborate landscaping.  Carol and Hank loved their neighbors and their neighborhood.  They relaxed and entertained in their home, and they had cats – over the years, several wonderful cats – Sylvester, Joelle and Princess.

Carole and Hank kept active.  When not gardening or working on their home, they enjoyed Tai Chi.  They practiced yoga and worked out at the gym.  They also loved to travel.  Carole kept a daily diary of every trip she and Hank took chronicling hotels, sights, people, but mainly food – Carole loved a delicious meal and a glass of wine.  Hank and Carole explored the local area with friends. They traveled to New York, Virginia and California with family, and they loved a European cruise!

On May 13th, 2023 Carole passed with her daughters and friend Shirley by her side.  A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at 9:00 a.m. on March 11th at Bay Pines Cemetery where Carole will be reunited with Hank.  Friends are asked to arrive by 8:45 a.m. and then be escorted to the pavilion.  A breakfast reception with brunch drinks (because Carole loved brunch drinks) will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations in Carole’s honor to Friends of Strays, the oldest animal shelter in Pinellas County – www.friendsofstrays.org

Carole is survived by her sister Joelle Anderson of New York, New York; Karen Johnson and Son in Law Kirk Hansen of Alexandria, Virginia; and Wendy Johnson and Son in Law Johnny McCombs of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
