Walter Frank Upman, 100, born in Arcadia, Florida on July 30, 1919, went to be with the Lord on November 5, 2019. He is survived by his loving wife of 77 years, Nita L. Upman (nee Jones); daughters Janice (Bert) Duran of St. Petersburg and Julia L. Upman of St. Petersburg; grandchildren Angela (Jeff) Hicks, Troy Upman, April (Brian) Aldrich, Tiffany Upman and Jeff Morris; fourteen great grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and by an extended family. Walter was preceded in death by his son, Terrance F. Upman, and by a grandson, Shawn T. Upman.
As a young man, Walter worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Depression years. He served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant and medic in the South Pacific during WWII. His postwar career started as a display artist at Maas Brothers' Department Store and continued at several other companies. He then took a job with the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier, and he continued in that position until his retirement in 1986.
Walter loved to travel and to perform community volunteer work. He also enjoyed collecting rocks and fossils, photography, painting, bowling, reading and cooking and baking. He enjoyed his church and participating in various church ministries. He loved the Lord and his favorite verse was Psalm 19:14. "Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O'Lord, my strength, and my redeemer."
