John Green

John Green

GREEN, JOHN “Johnny”, age 72, left us peacefully after a brief illness on Saturday, June 2, 2018 to join  those he loved so deeply who have passed before him.

Born May 29, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA, he moved south with his parents at a young age, eventually settling in St. Petersburg where he began  his entrepreneurial career selling the Evening Independent after school at age 11. After attending Boca Ciega High School, St. Petersburg Junior College and serving in the US Navy, he returned home to become a regular on the car and boat racing circuits before finding his true passion in the music industry where he first created Back Bay Busing Co.  and later Magic Promotions and Entertainment. From orchestrating 3 day events on the St. Pete waterfront showcasing national headliners to matching a variety of Tampa Bay area businesses with the perfect local talent to enhance their patron’s experience, he did it all. Along the way, his unique skill set aided in the rebirth of the Historic Gulfport Casino, development of new talent at Big 3 Productions and event coordination for Madeira Beach’s ROC Park. He also worked tirelessly on yearly events such as The Grand Prix, Taste of Pinellas, John’s Pass Seafood Festival, Blues Fest, Rib Fest and Tall Ships, to name a few. As a great supporter of local charities, he contributed countless hours organizing musical fundraisers to aid their good work.

A colorful character from his earliest years, his wild Irish soul always required that he mourn life’s losses just as impressively as he celebrate its victories. His fierce loyalty and sincere interest in others built a lifetime of close friendships that included many of Rock & Roll’s biggest names but all held equal standing in his heart.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Green and wife, Cathy Hansen Green. Survivors include his daughter, Tiani Schifano, Durham, NC, siblings: Michael (Bonnie) Green  and Jimmy (Babs) Green,  Bokeelia, FL, Peggy (Bob) Albury and Sally (Vic) Loshniowsky, St. Petersburg, FL, Bobby (Sheila) Green, South Pasadena, FL, Elizabeth (Michael) Walker, Woodland Park, CO and Rosemary Porter, Hohentengen, Germany and many deeply loved nieces and  nephews, and dearly loved friends.

A private service will take place at Bay Pines Memorial Park.

A Catholic Mass will be held July 13, 9:30 a.m. at St. Jude Cathedral, 5815 5th Avenue N., St. Petersburg, FL and Life Celebration on July 17th, 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Mahaffey Theater, 401 1st Street S., St. Petersburg, FL 33701

It is requested that in lieu of flowers, charitable donations be made to The Edwards Family Foundation or Johns Hopkins All Children’s Foundation, St. Petersburg, FL

I met Johnny back in the mid 60’s. He went to school with my sister Sheri. They became very good friends and he spent a lot of time at our home in Lakewood shooting pool, eating biff burgers and just hanging out. . Johnny was a great guy and even though I didn’t see him much in later years he always went out of his way to come and give me a huge hug and say hello. Last time I saw him was at Dani’s celebration of life. Johnny, you will be missed. Thoughts and prayers to your family.
